Typhoid Vaccine

travel vaccineTyphoid fever is a serious disease caused by bacteria called Salmonella typhi. Typhoid fever is often transmitted by

  • drinking water contaminated by sewage
  • eating raw vegetables and fruit fertilized with human waste
  • eating food handled by an infected person
  • eating raw or improperly cooked shellfish taken from contaminated water

Typhoid fever is rare in countries with good sanitation practices. If you are travelling to a country that does not properly handle sewage or with poor hygiene practices check if you need to be vaccinated. For the best protection against typhoid fever it is important to have single typhoid vaccine at least two weeks before traveling. A vaccine booster is recommended for people who regularly travel to countries or areas where typhoid fever is a problem every three years.

If you are planning to travel outside Canada and wondering if you need to get vaccinated based on your destination country, feel free to call us at (905) 475-2353 or book your appointment online for consultation with our healthcare provider.
